Everything you need to know about SMART Repair

What does SMART Repair or PDR mean?

SMART Repair (Small to Medium Area Repair Technology) and PDR (Paintless Dent Removal) are methods used to repair minor dents in a vehicle’s bodywork without repainting the affected surface. These techniques are particularly useful for dents caused by hail, light impacts, and other minor damages.

The main benefits of PDR include preserving the vehicle’s original paint, being a faster and more cost-effective process compared to traditional body repair methods.

What are its advantages and limitations?

Main advantages
  • Preservation of the original paint: No repainting required, maintaining the vehicle’s integrity and original value.
  • Cost-effective: Generally, PDR repairs are more economical than traditional body repairs.
  • Speed: Most repairs can be completed in a few hours instead of days.
  • Ecology: By avoiding the use of chemicals and paints, the process is more environmentally friendly.
Limits of the method
  • Type of damage: Not all dents can be repaired with PDR.
Damage that has broken the paint or that is very large or deep may not be suitable for this technique.

  • Access to the back of the panel: It is necessary for the technician to be able to access the back of the damaged panel, which is not always possible depending on the location of the dent.

What are the main techniques?

  • Use of specialized tools:

Technicians use a variety of precision tools to massage the dent from the back of the damaged panel.
These tools allow pressure to be applied and move the metal back to its original shape without damaging the paint.

  • Adhesive method with suction cups:

This method involves the use of adhesive pullers that are placed on the outside of the dent.
Once the adhesive adheres, a tool is used to pull the dent outward.
The adhesive is then removed without damaging the paint.

  • Heat techniques:

In some cases, heat may be applied to the dented area to cause the metal to expand and return to its original shape.
This technique is often combined with the use of specialized tools to achieve a more precise finish.

  • Tapping with plastic hammer and mandrel:

Technicians can use plastic hammers and soft chucks to gently tap the affected area and restore the panel shape.
This technique is used with care to avoid additional damage.

How is the cost determined?

The cost of removing dents with PDR techniques can vary significantly depending on several factors:

  • Dent Size:

Small dents (less than one inch) are usually less expensive to repair, while larger dents increase the cost.

  • Number of dents:

Repairing multiple dents can be more expensive, although volume discounts are available.

  • Location of the Dent:

Dents in hard-to-reach areas, such as panel edges or near structural reinforcements, can increase cost due to the increased difficulty of repair.

  • Depth and Severity:

Deeper dents or dents that have caused some structural damage may require more work and therefore be more costly.

  • Material:

If the sheet metal is aluminum, the cost may increase due to the greater difficulty of the repair.
